The Saab 9-4X Crossover is finally here, after the very first vehicle to be produced commercially came off the production line at Saab’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.
A raft of senior staff were present at the Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico to see commercial production begin for the 9-4X, just three months after it was unveiled at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show last November. Jan Åke Jonsson, the President and CEO of Saab Automobile, was joined by Anders Svensson, Executive Director of Vehicles Lines, and Mikael Jacobsson, the Product Manager for the new 9-4X.
The 9-4X, which goes on sale in the UK in late 2011, features Saab's advanced XWD all-wheel-drive system and adaptive chassis control. The first car - chassis number 00001 - is a 2.8-litre V6 turbo engine car in Ice Pearl metallic paint and Aero trim. After being taken to the US for a test drive event, Chassis number one is destined for the firm's home country of Sweden, where it will go on display at the Saab car museum.
CEO and President Jan Åke Jonsson said of the historic event:
"This is a great day for Saab. The arrival of the 9-4X is another important step in the fulfilment of our business plan. This sporty and distinctive product will significantly broaden the appeal of our brand and give us access to an important new vehicle segment that is still growing, particularly in the United States."
