The first pictures and details of the Yaris Hybrid have been released by Toyota today.

The new Toyota Yaris Hybrid will get its first public outing at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, but the first pictures and details about the car have been released today.

The Yaris is Toyota's highest selling car in Europe, so the firm will be hoping that some of this success rubs off on the new hybrid version. The Yaris will be the second car in the company's core range to benefit from the addition of hybrid technology, after the launch of the Auris Hybrid in 2010.

The Hybrid Synergy Drive has been downsized to fit the Yaris, and now combines a new 1.5-litre 98bhp petrol engine with a smaller electric motor, transaxle, inverter and battery. In total the new system is 20% lighter than the one used in the Auris Hybrid. The size reductions mean that the occupant space and 286-litre boot storage capacity of the conventional Yaris model has not been reduced in the new hybrid.

Standard equipment that has already been announced for the new Yaris Hybrid includes automatic air-con and e-CVT automatic transmission.
