The name Bluebird is synonymous with speed, conjuring up images of Sir Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald and the astonishing land and water speed records they set. Now, however, the Bluebird name is back, but not where you'd expect it to be.
This is the Bluebird DC50, a new road-legal all-electric supercar which will be launched next year to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Donald Campbell's dual land- and water-speed records.
It's the brainchild of Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcom and nephew of Donald, and will be revealed at the Sustainable MotorExpo at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu in September.
The Bluebird DC50 will be powered by an electric motor with an output of up to 360bhp. The company has yet to release any performance statistics but claims that the DC50 will offer "acceleration to match a Porsche" and will have a range of up to 200 miles.
Fittingly, the car will be offered in one colour only -- Bluebird blue -- and will also be fitted with electrically-operated 'scissor' doors.
Just fifty examples of the Bluebird will be built. Pricing and specification details have yet to be announced.
Also to be unveiled at the Sustainable MotorExpo is the company's GTL electric racing car, which has been design to conform to the technical regulations laid down for the upcoming Formula E racing series, which is due to start next year.
