Volvo V50 Car Reviews

The Volvo V50 is a medium executive Estate. The Volvo V50 is essentially the estate version of the Volvo S40 which was created in an attempt on Volvos part to make a premium modern vehicle. The V50 also appears fashion conscious, which is quite odd for an estate car yet the V50 is all about fashion, and is perhaps more fashionable than functional, and that’s saying something as it’s a highly functional car, despite it not being as spacious as the typical estate vehicle.

Volvo V50 Overview

The latest V50 is built on the same platform as the Ford Focus meaning the V50 has good level of performance, but this comes at a price, and quite an expensive one at that. It does however have low insurance rates and the fuel economy is decent

Regardless of price the V50 is a good drive with responsive handling and a great deal of grip.

Background

The Volvo V50 was originally produced in 1995 and stood as an example of Volvo making an effort to move away from the image of a manufacturer who produces mainly tough workhorses.

The first and second generation models of the V50 have both been made available in saloon and estate form.

The first generation V50 was produced from 1995 to 2004 receiving a number of technical improvements in 2000. The second generation began in 2004 with a new design based on the Volvo P1 platform. The second generation model shares similarities with the Mazda3 and the European Ford Focus.

In 2008 the V50 received another facelift ensuring it remains current. Over the years the V50 has been nominated for a selection of awards including the ‘World Car of the Year’ award in 2005.

2010 also saw further developments for the V50, it is now available with new engines which comply with the Euro 5 mission standard. The 1.6D DRIVe model for example, comes with a start-stop system amongst other features which are designed especially to cut down fuel consumption and emissions, so hopefully you won’t have to spend as much on fuel.

Summary

The second generation V50 is surprisingly stylish for an Estate vehicle, and whilst it may be less spacious in comparison to other Estates on the market, it should still provide a sufficient amount of space for all occupants on a day to day basis. Overall the Volvo V50 has always been a popular choice for buyers looking to purchase an estate, even since it was known as the V40.
