The Phaeton is one of Volkswagen's first attempts at breaking into the luxury market. The car is designed to hold its own with the best of brands in the luxury car market, but it may take time before the Volkswagen brand is accepted as a luxury manufacturer. The Phaeton is a relatively rare sight on UK roads.

Volkswagen Phaeton Overview
The Phaeton contains all the necessary elements to qualify as a true luxury saloon which exhibits the full range of essential luxury saloon attributes. In short wheelbase form, the car is over five metres long. The car is powerful, well appointed, boasts a good build quality and a distinctive presence.
Background
The Volkswagen Phaeton is a full-size luxury saloon. The Phaeton is a four-door saloon that currently serves as Volkswagen’s high-end flagship model. The Phaeton was first produced in 2002 and was designed specifically to compete with other brands’ high-end flagship models.
Not much has been done to update the Phaeton, it has only received two facelifts, one in 2009 which saw the introduction of new LED daytime running lights as well as an improved centre console. A Fuel Stratified Injection V6 engine was also made available. As well as a bunch of new cosmetic options, 2009 saw the Phaeton W12 made available with a rear-view camera and a blind spot warning system.
The second facelift was applied in 2011 with the addition of more LED lights, bi-xenon headlights and a new bumper with LED fog lights to match the current Volkswagen styling direction. The 2011 model also offers a choice between a five seat layout or four seat layout.
Summary
There's no denying that the Phaeton is a premium top-notch car, but despite Volkswagen's efforts, the car still has a slight image problem. The car lacks the premium badge to accompany its premium offerings. Volkswagen still hasn’t received the credibility that it rightfully deserves in this sector.
