Mitsubishi Overview
Brief History
The Mitsubishi Group is a large group of individually owned Japanese companies who use the Mitsubishi name. The companies are independently owned and operated.
The company’s automotive association dates back as far as 1917, when the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. introduced Japan's first series production car, the Mitsubishi Model A. The car was incredibly expensive and production was halted in 1921. With the company undergoing many changes through the years, it wasn't until the early 1960s that they re-entered the car market with the Mitsubishi 500. It was introduced to meet the demand for commercial vehicles.
With successful sales, the company created a single entity to focus on automotive production forming the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in 1970. To ensure continued success, they decided to increase their exports and forged alliances with established, foreign companies. Chrysler was allowed to purchase a stake of the company and by 1980 the company was producing a million cars a year.
Mitsubishi is the sixth-largest Japan-based automobile manufacturer, and today the company employs over 33,000 people.
Model Range
Mitsubishi Colt
The Mitsubishi Colt is a small family car that has been in production since 1962. The car is currently in its seventh generation as it has been since 2002.
The Colt is available as 3-door and 5-door hatchback, a 5-door estate, and a 2-door convertible. The Colt purchase price is good considering the standard level of specification being offered. Fuel economy and insurance are reasonable for a car in this class and emissions are low.
While not being particularly spacious, the Colt works well for a small family.
Mitsubishi ASX
The Mitsubishi ASX is a small 4x4 currently in its third generation.
The ASX is a spacious 5-door car, available with a range of engines and transmissions.
Mitsubishi i-MiEV
The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is a five-door hatchback electric car produced by Mitsubishi Motors.
The car has been in production since 2009 and runs off a lithium-ion battery pack; it has a range of 100 miles when fully charged. The i-MiEV has a top speed of 80mph. Whilst the exterior is not particularly appealing, buyers will be drawn to the cheap running costs and zero-emissions aspects of the vehicle.
Mitsubishi Lancer
The Mitsubishi Lancer is a large family car that has been in production since 1973.
The aesthetics of the Lancer are superb, and the car has the handling to match. The car provides excellent value for money, but fuel costs and insurance rates will be high. It is equipped with adequate passenger space for five with good head and legroom. The car’s boot is spacious and can carry quite a bit of luggage.
The car is currently in its ninth generation. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is a high-performance version of the Lancer, with a top speed of 155mph.
Mitsubishi Outlander
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a large 4x4.
The car has been in production since 2001 and is currently in its second generation. The car works well as a spacious family car, but does not travel off-road as well as some of its competitors. It is available with a wide range of transmissions and engines.
Mitsubishi Shogun
The Mitsubishi Shogun is a large 4x4.
It is currently in its fourth generation. The car’s exterior design is much more stylish than that of its predecessor. The seven-seat model offers an impressive level of versatility. The third row of seats can fold completely away or be removed to increase boot space.
The Shogun provides a pleasurable driving experience. The car focuses on being a true off-roader rather than on providing a refined on-road experience.
The Shogun has been in production since 1982.
