The Berlingo Multispace is a small MPV offered by Citroen that gives a lot of practicality and space for an affordable price. Although it is no longer based on a van, like its predecessor, it does still have a van-like appearance. Appearances can be deceiving however, and it is surprisingly comfortable and good to drive, with body lean kept under control and its ability to smooth rough road surface. The choice of engines is between a 1.6 litre petrol, or three 1.6 litre diesels. The diesels offer the most pulling power for a full load, and are both smooth and quiet.

Citroen Berlingo Overview
The high, van-like, roofline means that inside the Berlingo there is plenty of space. Five adults can travel in comfort since it is not only headroom but also leg and shoulder-room are plentiful. Throughout the cabin there are storage bins and cubbyholes which make this ideally suited to life as a family car. The boot is large but if it doesn’t meet your carrying requirements the rear seats can be folded or removed completely giving it 3000 litres of storage space. An added bonus is the rear sliding doors, which are fitted as standard, making access to the rear and side loading a breeze.
The interior isn’t the most exciting, but, as with the rest of the car, it serves its purpose well. There are a number of hard wearing plastics and the dash is organised in a clear, easy-to-use fashion. The basic model is sparsely kitted, which is a little disappointing since a number of the storage solutions are options. One interesting option is the three individual rear seats, which allows you to fit three child seats in the back, an excellent feature for families with small children.
Background
The Berlingo Multispace is a passenger version of the Berlingo van that has been around since 1996. When the Berlingo was presented at the 1996 Paris Motor Show, it appeared with three concept cars. The Berlingo Grand Large was one of these concepts, which was developed to become the Multispace.
In 2008 the Berlingo II was released, which is larger than the original and based on the PSA Peugeot Citroen Platform 2. This platform is also used for the C4 and C4 Picasso.
Summary
The Berlingo Multispace’s versatility and storage solutions make this an ideal family car. It is affordable and very cheap to run which makes it attractive competition for the more conventional MPVs.
