The Giulietta has Alfa’s signature ‘stand out from the crowd’ styling, but beauty is more than skin deep with a new 235bhp, 1742cc engine whose performance compares favourably with its competitors....
Alfa Romeo Giulietta Overview
Its quality is not only skin deep either, with the excellent range of engines on offer, a choice of three petrol or three diesel variations. There are two 1.4 litre offerings, with the MultiAir variant gaining 170bhp, and a 235bhp 1.7 litre model that will push any hot hatch. For diesel fans there is a 1.6 litre or two 2.0 litre units to choose from.
There is more room in this than previous Alfa’s, including the 147 which it replaced, however in the rear space is still a little restricted, and so larger passengers may find the Giuletta a bit of a struggle. The boot is of both a good size and shape.
In terms of safety, the Giulietta is class leading, scoring 5 stars in the Euro NCAP safety ratings, in 2011.
Background
The Giulietta replaced the Alfa 147 in 2010, and brings back the Giulietta name that was used on a range of small sporty models in the 50’s and 60’s. The previous Giulietta was available as a saloon, coupe or convertible, however the newest iteration is only available as a 5-door hatchback, and is marketed as a medium sized family car.
It is built on Fiat’s compact platform. This platform has been re-engineered since it was used for the Fiat Stilo and Bravo, and so is essentially a new platform with a longer wheelbase, and redesigned suspension.
Summary
The Giulietta is a medium sized family car, with distinctive Alfa styling that has wooed many consumers in the past. The use of quality materials inside the vehicle matches the excellent finish on the exterior, makes this a competitive car, and Alfa’s reputation for producing desirable, premium vehicles means it’s competitively priced too.
