Dacia was founded in 1966 under the name Uzina de Autoturisme Pitesti and the first car it produced was the Dacia 1100, a rebadged version of the Renault 8. In 1969, Dacia introduced the 1300 which was heavily based on the Renault 12.
Dacia continued building cars for the Romanian market until the late 1990s when it was taken over by Renault. Dacia's first post-Renault car, the Logan, was the most successful car built by Dacia at the time and became one of the biggest-selling cars in Eastern Europe.
