The new Volvo EX90 electric luxury SUV has been revealed in a swish Stockholm ceremony ahead of its global release in autumn 2023, with a UK release scheduled for early 2024. Launch Volvo EX90 models will be top-spec Twin Motor versions, priced from £96,225; later Single Motor models should cost from around £75,000.
The 2023 Volvo EX90 is the next-generation pure electric version of the existing Volvo XC90. For those not ready to make the switch to EV yet, an updated range of Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrids will be sold alongside the EX90 line-up.
However, Volvo hopes the EX90 will deliver enough appeal to convince customers. For starters, it will look smart and sophisticated, with a design that evolves the popular XC90 look, while bringing in elements of the 2021 Volvo Concept Recharge show car.
The front of the new Volvo EX90 won’t have a traditional grille, in the interests of aero efficiency. The familiar Volvo ‘Thor’s Hammer’ LED headlights will be evolved, and sleek air curtains either side of the front bumper will provide a wind-cheating appearance.
The Volvo EX90 will ride on large alloy wheels and boast clean-cut and crisp side feature lines, along with polished metal detailing and smooth retractable door handles. At the rear, another familiar Volvo feature, the vertical tail lamps, will be reinvented as structural LED elements. There will also be a cool LED light bar running the width of the bootlid.
The new Volvo EX90 will feature an upmarket, plush and eco-friendly interior. Volvo says it will use 50kg of recycled materials, including a new fabric the firm has invented called Nordico. Seats will be trimmed in fully-sustainable wool upholstery. Volvo will offer a choice of seven different interior ‘rooms’, or colour and trim combinations, for a plush and bespoke feel.
The centrepiece of the new Volvo EX90’s cabin will be a portrait-style touchscreen infotainment system. This will run Google’s Android Automotive operating system, with built-in Google Assistant, Google Maps and the Google Play store. It will feature over-the-air updates and should work super-fast thanks to high-power Qualcomm chips.
The new Volvo EX90 will be a roomy car, capitalising on the space-efficiency of a dedicated EV platform. The middle-row seats will be commodious and the third row of chairs in the EX90 seven-seater should be accommodating, too. They will fold flat into the floor to create a large boot, with an additional stowage area under the bonnet for storing charging cables.
The pure electric 2023 Volvo EX90 is likely to offer a considerable power output from its twin electric motors, probably upwards of 350PS. It may share the same 111kWh battery as the Polestar 3, which will offer a range of more than 360 miles – possibly close to 400 miles. High-tech DC rapid charging will facilitate top-ups from 0-80 percent in just 30 minutes.
Volvo is promising standard-setting levels of safety in the new EX90. It is fitted as standard with Lidar sensors, which are sensitive enough to detect pedestrians, in the dark, from a distance of 250 metres away. They will enable autonomous driving functionality in the future, when legislation allows, which will be delivered via a subscription-based over-the-air update. The EX90 also has eight cameras, five radars and 16 ultrasonic sensors.
The new Volvo EX90 will be revealed in full on 9 November 2022. Its scheduled release in the UK is from autumn 2023, with prices expected to start from around £75,000.
