Skoda bosses are planning the largest growth initiative in the entire history of the company, with a new model due to be unveiled every six months, and they are building it all around the Yeti – a rugged crossover which has proved to be a big hit.

The Skoda Yeti, originally launched in 2009, garnered a great deal of praise and has been a great success for the company. With excellent handling, high build quality, and an attractive design, the Yeti is now one of the most popular cars in the crossover sector, but Skoda is not going to be satisfied with just that – they plan to build on this success and take the company to new heights.

The Skoda board member in charge of technical development – Dr Eckhard Scholz – has acknowledge the importance of this segment of the market for the firm and the influence the Yeti’s success has had on their future plans, and announced that the believe there to be space in the crossover class for new cars in a range of sizes, both larger and smaller than the Yeti.

New versions of the Yeti, and also the Czech VW Up! are expected as soon as next year, with the Czech VW Up! likely to be the first to go on sale. This ‘New Small Family’ or ‘NSF’ car will go on sale in the first half of next year, and will surprise many as it is being released as an electric model – fulfilling the company’s pledge to have one on sale by 2017 with plenty of time to spare.

If you want to know what the new models are likely to look like, the company’s ‘Vision D’ hatch concept car recently shown in Geneva, and used to display the new simplified version of their ‘winged arrow’ badge, is probably a good indication.

It is thought that this will be the inspiration for the next Octavia, as well as a new compact car which will come in somewhere between the Fabia supermini and the family model. Expected to hit UK showrooms around the beginning of 2013, this will feature a large liftback rear and will be 4.20 metres in length.
