Volvo's new premium small family car, the V40, has recorded the highest score of any car ever tested in the Euro NCAP crash tests.

The V40 was assessed in four major areas -- adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist -- and was assigned a five-star rating based on its performance in these key areas.

The Volvo was awarded 98% for adult occupant protection, 75% for child occupant protection, 100% for safety assist and 88% for pedestrian protection. It is the car's pedestrian protection score, however, which is the most impressive and is due to the V40's pedestrian airbag which inflates from under the bonnet if you hit someone, cushioning the pedestrian's head from damage.
