A record-breaking 94,000 people attended this years’ Silverstone Classic event according to figures released by the organisers, the largest turnout in the 24-year history of what has become the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival.
The unprecedented crowd numbers at last month’s three-day spectacular were treated to the world’s biggest ever parade of Grand Prix cars, as well as special celebrations marking the centenary of the Maserati marquee and the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang.
The 1,125 entrants making up 24 grids also sets a new standard for the event, the highlights of which are to be screened in an hour-long ITV4 special to be aired for the first time at 9pm on Thursday 14 August.
Sadly, the 2014 event was also touched by tragedy when an accident in the HGPCA pre-1966 Grand Prix car event saw driver Denis Welch lose his life, the first fatality at a Silverstone Classic event in its 24-year –history. The 69-year-old retired businessman and respected classic racer from Staffordshire died when his Lotus 18 overturned during the race on the final day of the event.
