You must have seen the adverts on television. You know, the ones where Stephen Fry tells us that instead of spending two weeks on a beach in Barbados, what we should really do on our holidays is spend a fortnight in a caravan in Worthing.

Well it seems Chevrolet is anticipating that more Brits will holiday in Blighty this year, and has released some top tips for safe caravanning.

  1. Practice turning, stopping and reversing before you venture out onto the public roads. Ensure that you are confident that you can tow a caravan safely before you set off.
  2. Prepare a safety checklist and run through it before you set off.
  3. Make sure that the caravan's taillights are working.
  4. Do not exceed 50mph whilst towing.
  5. Avoid sudden manoeuvres and make sure you leave plenty of room through corners.
  6. Always ask someone to get out and help you reverse.
  7. Try not to park on a slope.
  8. When parking, always chock the caravan's wheels and apply the car's handbrake.
  9. Stand to one side when removing the caravan's chocks.
  10. Read the caravan manufacturer's instructions.
