The Institute of Advanced Motorists has published some top tips on driving around bends from one of the UK's top advanced drivers, Peter Rodger.
Remember the acronym IPSGA,
- Information - Check your mirrors to see what is going on around you.
- Position - On a left hand bend move closer to the centre-line, and on a right-hand bend move closer to the kerb, helping to improve your view of the corner. However, always stick to your lane.
- Speed - Adjust your speed before the corner.
- Gears - Select the correct gear before reaching the corner.
- Accelerate - Smoothly accelerate through the corner if it is safe to do so. This helps to balance the car. If it is slippery, hold a constant speed through the corner.
Rodger said, "Preparation is key with most things in life, and cornering safely is no exception. Changing gear or reducing speed once in the bend unbalances the car, which is at best nerve-wracking, and at worst dangerous. You'll also make better progress through bends if you use this sequence, and can enjoy the feeling of accelerating smoothly away afterwards."
