The UK public are overwhelmingly in favour of regular eye tests being mandatory for drivers according to a recent survey.

Nearly 90% of those polled in the online survey by retail giant Motorpoint said that regular eye tests should be introduced for all motorists to ensure their vision was up to the required standard for driving. Almost 700 people were questioned as part of the survey, which Motorpoint initiated after figures from road safety charity Brake revealed that an estimated 2,900 casualties are caused each year as a result of drivers suffered from impaired vision.

Mark Carpenter, Motorpoint managing director, said: “The results of our poll are quite clear – it’s vital for all drivers to get their eyes checked professionally on a regular basis. Although there is a cost associated to this and procedures should be put in place to keep these costs to an absolute minimum, the benefits of this in terms of safer motorists are clear for everyone to see moving forward.”
