An all-star list of celebrities have been confirmed for a new event taking place at this month’s Silverstone Classic (28-30 July), raising money for Prostate Cancer UK.
The inaugural Celebrity Challenge Trophy Race will see teams of stars go head-to-head on the track, with each team captained by a motor racing legend. The celebrities will tackle Silverstone’s famous Grand Prix circuit behind the wheel of a fleet of period Austin A30 and A35 racing saloons provided by the Historic Racing Drivers Club. The celebrities and their team captains will qualify and race on Saturday, and have the opportunity of winning the charity prize fund of £10,000 for the event’s official charity, Prostate Cancer UK.
Touring Car legend Anthony Reid will lead a team of Olympic gold medallists including cyclist Jason Kenny, skeleton bobsled champ Amy Williams, and rowing brothers Jonny and Greg Searle. The world of music will be represented by former Lotus F1 racer Martin Donnelly’s team, which includes Howard Donald of Take That and former ACDC frontman Brian Johnston. Steve Soper – once voted the greatest saloon car racer of all-time by readers of Motor Sport magazine – will lead a team of two-wheeled legends including former Grand Prix World Champions Wayne Gardner and ‘Fast’ Freddie Spencer. Former F1 driver and current commentator Mark Blundell skippers a team of TV personalities including former Dragon Theo Paphitis and Ant Anstead of For The Love of Cars and Wheeler Dealers fame, while fellow Formula One alumni Rupert Keegan heads a team from Sky Sports which includes champion boxers-turned-pundits Carl Froch and Johnny Nelson and presenter Mike Wedderburn.
