A robot in Germany has been helping people to park their cars and take the hassle out of finding a spot.

The technology is located at Dusseldorf airport and was installed in order to free up more space in their parking areas. The makers say that Ray can fit 60% more cars into the same area that would be required by humans parking traditionally.

The process has been a hit with those who lack confidence in their parking abilities. All they have to do is leave their vehicle at a designated point and allow the robot to come and pick it up after measuring it. Ray scoops up the car with forks that support each wheel and takes it to a slot in the parking area which is chosen using the robot’s software. On return, the customer pays the fee and their car is brought back to them.

Ray’s software can make the best possible use of available parking space by slotting cars of similar sizes together and by doing reshuffles of all cars if needs be.

Dr Christian Jahncke is the managing director of SITA Airport IT and he said ‘This technology is especially handy during peak times,’
‘Instead of spending millions of Euros to extend our garages, we could simply make better use of the space we already have.’
