Peugeot will reveal its new 208 Type R5 rally car at the Paris Motor Show next week.
The rules of rallying dictate that the cars used have to be derived from standard road cars, and that Peugeot must sell over 25,000 road-going models to the public in order to compete.
The R5 replaces the old 207 Super 2000 and, like its predecessor, features all-wheel drive, long travel suspension and a five-speed sequential rally gearbox. However, whereas the old car was given a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated engine, the 208 comes with a turbocharged 1.6-litre unit which develops 280bhp and 295lb-ft of torque.
The 208 should also be quicker than the old 207 as Peugeot has managed to reduce the car's weight by 40kg. In addition to this, the R5 gets a wider track, bigger 18-inch wheels and a spoiler.
The Peugeot 208 Type R5 rally car will go on sale next year.
