In conjunction with Ericsson, Goteborg Energi and the Viktoria Institute, Volvo has developed a new way of measuring and paying for electricity when charging a vehicle.

Volvo have developed a system called ELVIIS (Electronic Vehicle Intelligent Infra Structure), which could potentially change the way we view electric vehicles in the UK.

The innovative system is designed to allow the driver to charge their electric car's battery pack at a range of ordinary power outlets. A driver's most convenient outlet will be identified via GPS, and the technology also enables the driver to pre-set the timing and charging amount on the touch screen or remotely using either a tablet or a smart phone.

Sophisticated technology

The car sets the charging scheme by communicating with the grid using the mobile network. The charging scheme aims to support optimal operation of the grid, in order to discover the most favourable energy prices which are available. The driver's mobile will subsequently receive a direct report if an unintended interruption occurs during the charging process at any stage. Drivers will also have a personal utility bill that collects the cost of each individual charge.

Vice President of Electric Propulsion Systems, Volvo Car Corporation, Lennart Stegland, said, "Our basic view is that the owner of an electric vehicle shouldn't have to sacrifice any of the properties he or she expects from a luxury car."

He continued: "This smart technology for charging in any outlet, and paying automatically via your own electricity bill, is an excellent example of how we do everything to make the daily use easier for the customer."

The Volvo C30 Electric is equipped with an integrated 7-inch, colour touch screen to make the charging concept as convenient as possible for the driver. This technology will continue to be tested during this year with five C30 Electric cars. If successful, those involved in the process will hope that it alters the way people view electric cars and that their popularity may increase as a result.
