Finnish tyre manufacturer Nokian Tyres has broken its own ice-speed record using nothing more than a set of 20-inch winter tyres and a 572bhp Audi.
The new record of 335.713 km/h -- 208.6mph to you and me -- was set by Nokian's test driver Janne Laitinen and beats the previous record by 2.5mph.
The car used to complete the impressive speed run was a previous-generation Audi RS 6. Powered by a 5.0-litre V10 producing 572bhp and 516lb-ft of torque, the RS 6 can get from 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds and an on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. For the speed run, the electronic limiter was, of course, removed.
In addition to binning the speed limiter, Nokian fitted a set of its Hakkapelitta 8 20-inch studded winter tyres. An interesting side-note is that at speeds above 200mph, the tyres' metal studs hit the ice more than 43 times every second.
The run was completed in Finland's Gulf of Bothnia and to make the record official Laitinen had to complete two runs in opposite directions, both within the space of one hour.
