Land Rover has developed a battery-powered Defender for use on safari.

The Defender Safari EV concept ditches its conventional diesel engine in favour of an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. This will develop 80bhp and 330Nm of torque.

The leccy Landy’s range is estimated to be around 55 miles and it will be able to achieve speeds of up to 37mph. Besides lower running costs, another bonus is said to be that because electric motors run nearly silently, the car will be able to get closer to indigenous wildlife without disturbing it.

The car will debut at Indaba 2011 in Durban between the 7th and 10th of May.
