Racing giant Michael Schumacher has come out of a coma and has left hospital in Grenoble.
It has been nearly six months since the terrifying ski accident which left the F1 hero fighting for his life. Recent reports had suggested that good news was to be unlikely so today’s announcement will come as welcome news to racing fans and the general public alike.
December 29 2013 saw Schumacher taken into medical care after striking his head on a rock while he skied off-piste. This led to blood clots having to be surgically removed in order to save his life. His family have maintained privacy through their ordeal but Sabine Kehm has spoke on their behalf and said:
“Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore.
“His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.
“The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him.
“For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye.”
Social media has been awash with support for Schumacher since the accident and the Twitter hashtag #prayforschumacher featured prominently. Racing enthusiasts will no doubt be hoping that he makes the best recovery possible.
