Mercedes has teamed up with custom boat builders Cigarette Racing to produce the world's most powerful electric powerboat.

The Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept was inspired by Mercedes' SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive, the electric version of Mercedes' stunning SLS supercar, and is on display at the Miami International Boat Show this week.

The 38-ft long powerboat is fitted with two drive units, both of which contain six independent electric motors. In total, the boat churns out a not-inconsiderable 1,656 kW -- 2221bhp to you and me -- and 2213lb-ft of torque, giving a top speed of, and I'm quoting here, "over 99mph".

The boat can be recharged in just seven hours thanks to its two 22-kW on-board chargers and is adapted to fit the charging structure already in place at many of America's marinas.

Like the SLS, the Cigarette AMG Electric Drive Concept has a low centre of gravity thanks to the low placement of its batteries and electric motors. Mercedes claims that this gives the boat "sublime handling characteristics during more dynamic changes of direction."

The parallels between car and boat don't end here either. Perhaps most noticeably, both the SLS and the Cigarette concept are finished in 'AMG Electricbeam Magno', the, ahem, distinctive matte paint finish which is reserved for the electric version of the SLS. The cockpit also takes its inspiration from the interior of the SLS.
