Lotus has announced that it is to create more than 100 jobs, thanks to a £100 million investment.

The cash injection comes from Malaysian company DRB-HICOM, which owns Group Lotus. It acquired the firm in January 2012 when it bought previous owner Proton.

The investment will allow the firm to recruit 45 specialist engineers, 40 manufacturing operatives and 18 graduates.

The Norfolk-based sports car manufacturer currently employs in excess of 1,100 staff across the UK.

Lotus says that the investment is in response to increased global demand for its cars and an "anticipated rise in interest in its engineering consultancy services." The increased workforce will contribute to the development of new products within Lotus Engineering, with a focus towards expanding into new markets.

90 per cent of all Lotus Vehicles are exported.

Aslam Farikullah, chief operating officer at Lotus, had this to say: “It's been a period of substantial change at Lotus and we are now in a strong position to expand our work on future products and to increase production in our manufacturing faclities."
