The British based firm are working on virtual assistance for drivers.

Their aim is to reduce distraction and to increase performance driving for track and road users alike. A system of projection could mean that information can be portrayed across the entire windscreen including possible hazards, navigational assistance, optimal racing lines and ghost cars.

Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover, said: “We are working on research projects that will give the driver better information to enhance the driving experience. By presenting the highest quality imagery possible, a driver need only look at a display once. Showing virtual images that allow the driver to accurately judge speed and distance will enable better decision-making and offer real benefits for every-day driving on the road, or the track.”

They are also seeking to develop a system whereby a driver can operate controls using hand gestures; this would reduce the risk of their attention being taken away from the road. For racers this could mean better times, for road users less accidents. It has been mastered by the video games industry and could soon be in your car’s cabin. They report that this technology could be available within the next few years.

Research is ongoing into how best to display the information; this includes investigations into how cameras could track the driver’s head and eye movements in order to provide accurate depth perception imaging.
