Honda has announced it is returning to Formula One in 2015 as engine supplier to the McLaren team.
The team will be known from 2015 as McLaren Honda.
The Japanese manufacturer has not participated in F1 since the end of the 2008 season, shortly before the Honda Racing F1 Team was sold to Ross Brawn, becoming the World Championship-winning Brawn GP.
The announcement also marks the return of the McLaren team to Honda power; the team has used Mercedes engines since 1995. It's not the first time McLaren and Honda have worked together, however, as Honda was McLaren's engine supplier between 1988 and 1992, powering the team to four Drivers' Championships and four Constructors' Championships.
It was with McLaren Honda that Ayrton Senna (pictured above) won all three of his World Championships and Alain Prost his third.
McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said: "The names of McLaren and Honda are synonymous with success in Formula One, and, for everyone who works for both companies, the weight of our past achievements together lies heavily on our shoulders."
From next year, F1 cars will use 1.6-litre direct-injection turbocharged V6 engines, and Honda claims that the shift to smaller engines is central to its decision to return to the sport.
Takanobu Ito, President and CEO of Honda, said: "The new F1 regulations with their significant environmental focus will inspire even greater development of our own advanced technologies and this is central to our participation in F1."
