Honda has recalled thousands of CR-Vs across Europe and America because of a fault which could lead to the driver's door catching fire.

The fault was highlighted after five drivers -- one in Britain and four in the USA -- complained that they could smell burning.

Nearly half a million vehicles are affected by the recall, 77,000 of which are registered in the UK.

The fault has been identified as a faulty seal on the driver's window switch, which allows water or liquids to seep into the car's electrics.

The recall only applies to CR-Vs built between 2002 and 2006 and owners of such vehicles are advised to contact their local dealer if they have any concerns.

Honda will be contacting owners of affected vehicles this week to notify them.
