Fuel economy is still the top priority for motorists when choosing their next car, a survey from Auto Trader has revealed.

The survey shows that 53% of drivers consider good fuel economy a major factor in deciding upon their next purchase, while only 24% consider low CO2 emissions a key priority.

Younger drivers aged between 17 and 24 are less likely to be concerned about fuel economy, with 65% stating that they did not even consider it when purchasing their current motor. By contrast, over 65s seem to be the most concerned with fuel consumption -- over 62% claimed it was a priority when choosing their current car.

Many drivers are also switching to diesel to save money. Of those who currently drive a diesel car, 58% claimed that they switched from petrol to save money.

With petrol prices soaring and a proposed 3p increase in duty slated for introduction in August, it's unsurprising that drivers are looking to save money on their fuel bills.
