The Ford Mustang will be available with a 2.3-litre version of the four-cylinder turbocharged engine currently fitted to the Focus ST when it goes on sale in the UK in 2015.
The 2.0-litre engine fitted to the Focus ST produces 247bhp, but the power output for the 2.3-litre Mustang engine is expected to be in excess of 300bhp.
The Mustang will be offered in traditional V8 form when it goes on sale in the US market; however, Ford has, perhaps wisely, decided that the V8-engined model would have a limited appeal in Europe.
While muscle car fans will undoubtedly deride the fitment of a turbocharged four-pot engine to an American icon, it's nice to see that the Mustang will at least be cheaper to run -- and therefore more popular -- when it makes it to Europe.
So, what do you think? Is putting a four-cylinder engine in a Mustang tantamount to sacrilege, or a necessary concession to sky-high European fuel prices?
