Nissan have made history by entering a Le Mans test day with a car with no rear view mirrors.

The Japanese manufacturer has become the first to have a car race at Le Mans without rear view mirrors which have become such common place in motoring. The first use of them was in 1911 and was also born out of motor sport. Ray Haroun was a winner in the Indianapolis 500 driving his Marmon Wasp and just over 100 years later we may be seeing the beginning of the end for a technology which has served racers well for a century.

The Nissan ZEOD RC is fitted with a rear facing camera which they say can provide an improved view compared to traditional mirrors. Added to that is a radar system which can give drivers in depth information about how quickly competitors are closing on them and from which direction.

“These driver assist systems are just another aspect of future technology transfers that will improve the road cars of the future. The development of the battery technology will obviously assist the development of future versions of the Nissan LEAF and other hybrid models, but lessons learned from the driver assist systems will find their way into every Nissan model in the future.’’ said NISMO’s Global Head of Brand, Marketing & Sales, Darren Cox.

It appears that such technologies could become commonplace in the road models of tomorrow.
