A leading road safety group has called upon the UK’s motorists to keep their wits about them when using roundabouts.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is hoping drivers will take heed of their advice on the subject, and see the number of accidents at roundabouts fall as a result.
Peter Rodger, Chief Examiner for the IAM, said: “At roundabouts, it is useful to try and consider the whole thing as one manoeuvre – that way you have a plan about which lane to be in, when to move into that lane, and what signals you expect to use. But you need to prepare to be flexible – other road users don’t always behave as we’d expect them to.”
Mr Rodger is encouraging drivers to brush up on their skills by offering advice for tackling roundabouts.
Give any signals in plenty of time. Look ahead and try to identify a gap in traffic as you approach the roundabout, but remember to check your mirrors to keep aware of traffic around you, and even if you identify a gap beware of the vehicle in front – they may not go for the gap that you would. Having found a gap in the traffic, accelerate smoothly into it, as you would any other junction
Be aware of road markings guiding you as you approach the roundabout. Position your car on approach according to the exit you are taking, and try to give other vehicles plenty of room.
Slow down smoothly to a speed that’s appropriate for the roundabout, taking into account the position of other road users. Once you’re at the right speed, and before turning, select the correct gear. Do a final mirror check, especially the mirror on the side you are turning towards.
