BMW has revealed a one-off V12 version of its Z3 roadster.

But hold on, the Z3 went out of production years ago. What are BMW doing showing us a V12 version of a car which first saw the light of day in 1996?

Well, in BMW words, the mighty 5.4-litre brute was shoehorned into a Z3 to "see how far we could stretch the concept." Unfortunately, Beemer bottled it, and the Z3 V12 never saw the light of day.

This is a pity because the Z3 was never actually that good to drive, and a V12 engine might have made it the proper bruiser it should always have been. The most powerful engine ever fitted to the Z3 was the 3.2-litre straight-six from the E36 BMW M3 and, while this was a great car, we can't help feeling that a massive V12 would have given the roadster a little "je ne sais quoi" (or, as BMW would say, "ich weiss nicht").

So, come on BMW, stick a V12 in the Z4. Go on, we dare you.
