When the original Mazda MX-5 was launched at the 1989 Chicago Motor Show, it revolutionised the sports car market by re-inventing the affordable roadster for the 1990s. Ten years later it had become the most successful sports car of all time.

The current third-generation MX-5 has been around for eight years now and is due for replacement in the not-too-distant future. But neither time nor its rivals can dull the MX-5's lustre, and in our view it remains the best all-round open-top car in the world.

The MX-5 offers an intoxicating blend of genuine driver involvement, reliability and, crucially, affordability: you can pick up an entry-level model for around the same price as a family hatchback. For a sports car it's not even desperately impractical. Providing you don't have the need to carry vast amounts of luggage (or more than one passenger) the MX-5 is a car which is easy to live with on a day-to-day basis.
