BMW is investing £500m into new equipment at its Oxford factory and factories in Swindon and Birmingham.

The move was met with support from BMW’s 5,000 British workers and will provide a much needed boost to the UK economy. BMW also announced plans to expand the current MINI model range.

The MINI has been a considerable success story for BMW since its inception in 2001. A quarter of a million new MINIs are produced in Britain every year with the majority being exported. 1 in 10 cars sold by BMW is a MINI.

The Prime Minister said: “The Mini plant in Oxford has been one of our great manufacturing success stories, they should be hugely proud of their achievements. They have shown once again that the UK is a major player in the global automotive industry.”

This follows news that the new Nissan Qashqai will be built in Sunderland, safeguarding 6,000 jobs, another much needed boost for the Britain’s automotive industry.
